Every Bit Counts This Earth Day
By Nicola Acutt, Vice President, Sustainability Strategy
Today officially marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, where we bring awareness to the importance of climate action to help heal our planet. We’re facing unprecedented times—sheltering in place, homeschooling, and taking care of loved ones over phone or video. This is a powerful reminder of how interconnected and interdependent we are on each other, our communities and our planet. And how VMware’s rallying cry this Earth Day—Every Bit Counts—is more meaningful than ever.
Every Bit Counts builds on our belief that small, individual actions add up to significant impact. Tackling a crisis takes collaboration, resilience, and action. So, this Earth Day, we’re encouraging our community of approximately 31,000 employees to think about how we can make a difference even under these extraordinary circumstances. From choosing to reuse instead of throwing away, or taking a bike instead of driving a car, to developing sustainability solutions for our customers, Every Bit Counts.
In this year’s Earth Day video, our theme at VMware is Every Bit Counts and why getting to net-zero carbon emission matters when it comes to tackling global challenges. This double meaning expresses how software (bits and bytes) can help reduce a company’s carbon footprint. And, it reminds us that our individual actions are never too small or insignificant to make a difference.
This Earth Day, we’re encouraging each of our employees to do their bit. For each VMware employee who commits to taking action—small or big, at home or in their community—we will plant a tree on their behalf. Trees are one of the planet’s most impressive innovations. Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to more than 80 percent of the world’s remaining biodiversity. Trees also serve a critical function for humanity by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.
Additionally, this year, due to the increased global needs surrounding the current pandemic, we will be re-investing loan funds with Kiva eco-entrepreneurs.
We’ve made it a priority at VMware to define our path to net-zero and embed sustainability and resilience into our business. In addition, we’re relying on each other and our individual actions because Every Bit Counts.
Be well. Stay well.
