Empowered Women Empower Women
First Women of Regions Symposium held during Women’s History Month.
By Lara Warren
On March 3 and 4, 165 women invited from across the Regions footprint convened for the inaugural Women of Regions Symposium. The theme for the in-person event was “Empowered Women Empower Women.”
A collaboration between Regions’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Learning & Development (L&D) and Talent Management Centers of Expertise (COEs), the symposium was created to connect key female talent from across the bank. It was a continuation of Regions’ efforts to develop and retain diverse talent — in this instance, women.
“What we recognized is that we really needed the opportunity to bring women together — to network, to learn from each other, to build relationships,” said Clara Green, head of DEI and co-sponsor of the event. The symposium was an event three years in the planning — COVID-19 slowed down plans for the event, which was originally planned for 2020.
The enthusiasm and excitement of the participants was palpable as the long-awaited event finally was held at Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa outside of Birmingham.
“We’re providing women an opportunity to really focus on their development, network with each other, and be in a space where they feel comfortable and can enjoy each other,” said Seanna McGough, head of L&D and co-sponsor of the symposium.
Participants were selected to represent female talent across various leadership levels, functions, ethnicities and generations.
The symposium featured a keynote from BBC journalist and co-author of The Confidence Code Katty Kay, a panel discussion hosted by Regions’ general counsel Tara Plimpton, a Birmingham-based women-owned business showcase, breakout sessions on a variety of career-related topics, and plenty of opportunities for networking.
“This was the first-ever women’s symposium,” said participant and Strategic Planning Manager Erin Morgan. “Regions continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating an organization where women feel empowered, where women feel engaged, where women support other women — and men also support women — this symposium has been reflective of that.”
