Elsevier and the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) Deliver Specialized Content to Exploration Geologists
Over a century’s worth of geological maps from SEG are now discoverable and downloadable through Geofacets
New York, February 11, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, medical and technical information products and services, and the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) today announced the inclusion of maps from SEG’s flagship Economic Geology journal into Geofacets, Elsevier’s research tool for geoscientists working in exploration. The joint effort means that geoscientists in the metals and mining, and oil and gas industries can now access over 250,000 maps via Geofacets, including approximately 15,000 that have been published in Economic Geology over the past 107 years.
With SEG’s established presence in the metals and mining industry, and Economic Geology being a premier publication for geologists seeking to understand, describe and discover ore deposits, this collaboration significantly increases the value of Geofacets for geologists focused on metals and mineral exploration.
“Locating mineral deposits and extracting metals is a painstaking task at the best of times: with viable deposits rare and extraction often complex, geoscientists need all the help they can get,” said Brian Hoal, Executive Director at SEG. “Through our collaboration with Elsevier, our members and other geologists in the industry can quickly discover our published maps -- helping them to develop vital insights when identifying possible new resources that many industries rely upon.”
Launched by Elsevier in 2010 and used by companies around the world, Geofacets offers map-based searching and filters that allow quick discovery and download of georeferenced geological maps. Its large database includes maps from Elsevier’s top Earth science journals, as well as esteemed publications of the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), the Geological Society of London and most recently, SEG.
“More than just ‘exploration’, we are in the business of discovery. And nowadays, many people would agree that we are not discovering enough,” said John Thompson, a veteran within the industry with experience in senior-level roles in the SEG and in companies such as Teck Resources and PetraScience Consultants. “We are hounds for information, but it’s not just about that. It’s about finding good information, finding it quickly and easily; then being able to use it for the work that we do. And this is what Geofacets is all about.”
“Any company in the exploration business knows that it is both risky and expensive, requiring significant investment of time and resources” adds Phoebe McMellon, Senior Product Manager of Geofacets at Elsevier. “To avoid unsuccessful ventures and investment, proper due diligence is critical and starts with having as much accurate scientific data and information as possible. By combining SEG’s highly-regarded content with Elsevier’s and other trusted sources’ into one easy-to-use web-based tool, we hope to help exploration geologists leverage critical content that they might never have uncovered otherwise.”
The Society of Economic Geologists’ content is now available to Geofacets users. For more information, visit www.geofacets.com/info/seg

About the Society of Economic Geologists
The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) is the leading organization dedicated to advancing science and discovery in the field of economic geology. The Society's nearly 7,000 members are based in over 100 countries and include representatives from industry, academia, non-profit, and government institutions. SEG has close ties with two independent corporations, SEG Foundation and SEG Canada Foundation, that fund educational geoscientific programs endorsed by the Society. Publications, conferences, short courses, and field trips ensure active communication of economic geology-related concepts within the membership and with the economic geology profession at large.
