DUCA Builds Value by Giving
Their "DUCA Village" PrDUCA’s Partnership with Opportunity International Canada Aims to Fight Poverty in South America
DUCA Financial Services Credit Union has a clear vision – financial security for everybody. They do their part to help make that vision a reality, by giving 4% of their profits to promote health and education and to alleviate poverty.
Their commitment is making a real difference in their brand, their staff and in communities both at home and abroad, as highlighted by two DUCA initiatives.
One of our values is “giving back”. Jack Vanderkooy, President and CEO DUCA Financial Services Credit Union Over the past three years, DUCA’s partnership with Opportunity International Canada has raised over $150,000 to fight poverty in South America. For example, the money raised helped Opportunity International Canada launch a micro-finance operation in Cartagena, Colombia, with senior members of DUCA’s team on the ground in offering their expertise to support the NGO professionals.
This project, entitled the “DUCA Village”, provides local, low-income entrepreneurs with access to micro-loans, savings support and insurance products. As of December 31, 2011, just over 2,000 local business people had received loans through trust group lending, 422 were drawing on solidarity group lending, and 273 people had individual loans.
Back in Canada, DUCA is sponsoring Go Green Go Dutch Go Bike 2012. The goal of this annual event – created by the Dutch Consulate in Toronto – is to show local communities that biking can be used for fun and commuting. By riding that day, DUCA and participating cyclists will be supporting a local money and awareness-raising initiative called Recipe for Community. Proceeds from the 2011 cycling event were donated to buy bikes, helmets and bike locks for Recipe for Community – St. James Town.
Whether it’s micro-lending or community cycling, DUCA continues to build a positive brand for itself by giving time and money to others.
