Driving Impact To Make Lasting Change
By Charisse R. Lillie - Fellow and Vice President, Community Investment, Comcast Corporation and Executive Vice President, Comcast Foundation
Over the years, I have been fortunate to observe the philanthropy world close up and from many different perspectives – as a funder, a collaborator, an adviser, and an evaluator. At Comcast NBCUniversal, we value each of those perspectives as we continually team up with our nonprofit partners to determine together how we can make the biggest difference in our communities.
We are grateful, for instance, to have had a hand in helping a 4-year-old Pittsburgh girl with developmental disabilities to communicate using customized technology funded by a grant we provided to Easterseals. We have helped empower a Colorado high school senior to become a first generation college student through a $10,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship. And we had the opportunity to enhance the innovative work of a California nonprofit that strengthens relationships between youth and local law enforcement, thanks to a $100,000 NBCUniversal Foundation 21st Century Solutions grant. Those are just some of the ways we worked to make things better this year.
In addition, this April we hosted another record-setting Comcast Cares Day, mobilizing more than 100,000 Comcast NBCUniversal volunteers around the globe to give back through perhaps one of the more powerful symbols of our incredible culture. We significantly expanded our Internet Essentials program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to bring the incredible capabilities of the Internet to low-income Americans to empower them to improve their lives. Also, for the third consecutive time, Comcast NBCUniversal was recognized by Points of Light as one of the nation’s most community-minded companies through The Civic 50.
As we look to build on our 2016 achievements to date, we welcome Dalila Wilson-Scott to the Comcast NBCUniversal team as our new senior vice president of Community Investment and Corporate Social Responsibility and president of the Comcast Foundation. In her new role, Dalila will lead the way in finding new and innovative means to embrace our unique media and technology assets to help people improve their lives.
We recognize that companies like ours can fill a vital role in improving lives both individually and collectively, and I invite you to learn more about how we at Comcast NBCUniversal give back in this latest issue of Inside CI. Thank you to our partners, our employees and our communities for the opportunity to direct our resources to drive change where it is most needed.
