Deloitte’s Wade Horn Appointed to Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Dr. Wade F. Horn, Ph.D. has been appointed to the new, bipartisan Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The 12-member commission was established earlier this year when Congress passed the Protect Our Kids Act of 2012 (H.R. 6655). The Commission will evaluate existing programs and prevention efforts, develop recommendations for a national strategy to reduce fatalities resulting from child abuse and neglect and present a report to Congress and the president. 

Dr. Horn is a director with Deloitte Consulting LLP, where he advises the state government practice’s health and human services clients. He previously served as the assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In that position, he oversaw more than 60 federal programs aimed at improving the well-being of children and helping families achieve self-sufficiency. Horn was also a presidential appointee to the National Commission on Children.

McConnell. “He will bring innovative ideas to the commission, challenge standard methodologies and deliver new, forward-thinking approaches to help us tackle the crises affecting our nation’s most vulnerable children.”

On average, four children die every day from abuse or neglect, according to data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System. Research also indicates that these victims are most often younger children. In 2011, 82 percent of child fatalities were children under the age of four; 42 percent were under one year old.

“Child abuse and neglect continue to be a tragedy affecting far too many children and families in our country,” said Horn. “I am honored and humbled to be given the responsibility of analyzing the issues and risk factors behind child abuse and neglect fatalities and recommending an aggressive solution that strengthens child abuse protection and treatment, reduces fatalities and brings new hope to our nation’s youngest victims.”
