Daimler Is Building the Future
Construction of Daimler's second battery factory is starting in Kamenz, Saxony. With investments of around 500 million Euro, one of the most state-of-the art and biggest battery factories in Europe is being erected at the Daimler's ACCUMOTIVE subsidiary.
In future, Kamenz will be further developed into a competence center for battery production. From the middle of 2018, the factory will make the lithium ion batteries for all electrified vehicles of Mercedes-Benz and smart, ranging from the plug-in hybrid to the all-electric models. In addition, the Kamenz factory will also produce batteries for the stationary Mercedes-Benz energy storage unit as well as for 48-volt systems. The number of employees at the site will also be gradually increased in the coming years and will even be more than doubled until the end of the decade.
"By 2025, we will have more than ten all-electric vehicles in the portfolio in the passenger car segment alone. In parallel, we are consistently driving forward with our plug-in hybrid offensive and the introduction of 48-volt systems" said Professor Thomas Weber, Management Board Member of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
The new plant will be built as a CO2-neutral factory. A block heating plant and a photovoltaic installation will provide the energy needed for the cutting-edge facility in combination with stationary battery storage units. Solar modules with an area of two soccer fields will be installed on the roof of the new production hall - and will generate two megawatt of electrical power. With this, Daimler is also taking a stand for sustainability in production.
And sustainability doesn't end with battery systems. That is why ACCUMOTIVE is also producing stationary battery storage units for industrial applications and private households.
