CVS Caremark FYI: CVS Caremark Publishes New Corporate Social Responsibility Report
We’re happy to report that we’ve released our new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, Reinventing Pharmacy, Creating Sustainable Solutions, which details the many ways CVS Caremark cares about our customers, our employees and the communities in which they live and work.
As a company helping people on their path to better health, we are extremely proud of our commitment to that purpose. The report tells the story of the issues that most matter to us, and shows the many ways we give back to the community and how, every day, we realize our values: innovation, collaboration, caring, integrity and – a key reason for this report – accountability.
Inside this year’s CSR report you’ll discover how we’re maintaining a strong focus on improving patient outcomes through better adherence to prescribed medications; cultivating a more engaged, diverse and healthier workforce; making progress toward our goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions; strengthening systems and practices to ensure supply chain responsibility; enhancing quality control processes in pharmacy operations; and building healthier communities through social investments and community engagement initiatives.
But there is a larger story, too, told in the pages of this year’s report. At a time when the health care system is presenting our customers, patients and clients with many challenges, we are working hard to reinvent pharmacy. At the core of the reinvention is the emerging role of the pharmacist as a trusted resource for not only information and advice, but for the delivery of quality care – which has a tremendous impact on personal and public health. Our pharmacists, along with our MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants<, are helping people navigate the changing health care landscape, while also helping them avoid or manage chronic disease by making sure they understand exactly how and when to take their medications.
Our colleagues are also featured in the report. Our over 200,000 employees know that, as an employer, CVS Caremark is committed to their health and wellness, and to creating an engaging work environment that allows them to grow as professionals and to fully realize their potential and career goals. We’ve made several exciting changes to our wellness program in 2012, and the report provides the details of our Plan for Health.
The Plan for Health isn’t all that is new this year. The report also provides specifics on our social audits of contract factories. Over the past two years, we have been implementing additional safeguards around our supply chain and collecting reliable data to begin the process of reporting the outcomes of these improvements.
Environmental health also remains a top priority for CVS Caremark. We are constantly striving to improve our processes in order to reduce the impact we have on the environment and to promote overall sustainability in our business model. In this report, we show how we have made considerable progress in reducing our carbon footprint. Specifically, we report that our carbon intensity has decreased by seven percent since 2010, which is nearly half way to our goal of a 15 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2018.
"When we think about the intent of our corporate social responsibility initiatives, we are mindful of our stakeholders: patients and customers; employees; local communities; regulators; and stockholders,” said CVS Caremark President and CEO Larry Merlo. “Our CSR Report is our main vehicle for sharing details on these initiatives so everyone can have a stronger sense of who we are as a company."
