CSX Employees Give Back to Chicago School
October 24, 2016 /3BL Media/ - As part of CSX’s “Beyond Our Rails” initiative to give back to communities across its network, the company hosted a day of service at Funston Elementary School in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 22. The school was one of a handful selected from across the country this year for a CSX Service Day.
CSX employees were joined by service partners City Year and Chicago-based Action for Healthy Kids. Volunteers made improvements to the school, including creating an outdoor learning space; constructing picnic tables, benches and planters; painting the basketball court and playground equipment; and painting murals on the school’s exterior and outdoor learning spaces.
“We are incredibly grateful to be awarded this grant, which has beautified our school community,” said Julie Hallums, Principal, Funston Elementary School. “The projects that were completed today will help provide an inviting and safe environment for our students and families to enjoy.”
CSX has deep roots in Chicago, operating two major facilities in the city as well as one facility in nearby Bedford Park. The company operates and maintains nearly 1,400 miles of track across Illinois.
“People see trains as a way to connect local businesses to the global economy, but here in Illinois, there is also a team of nearly 1,000 CSX employees who are active members of the community,” said Tom Livingston, Regional Vice President – State Government and Community Affairs, CSX. “We are proud to be a part of Chicago and we consider it our responsibility to give back to the city that supports us.”
