Hurricane Sandy caused dozens of deaths and massive damage to homes, businesses, power systems, and transportation systems. Citi’s core disaster strategy is to provide the resources that allow local actors to efficiently and effectively respond to current and future emergencies. The Citi Foundation was a founding member and is a lead donor of the Housing & Neighborhood Recovery Donor Collaborative with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC. To date, $3,255,000 has been distributed to 34 nonprofit organizations as part of the Collaborative towards recovery, preparedness, and resiliency efforts.
Amid the growing complexity of humanitarian action, it is increasingly apparent that staff training is essential to the success or failure of disaster preparedness and response efforts. Recognizing the need for accessible, affordable, high-quality training, Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD) created an online platform titled DisasterReady.org which provides sector-specific training on topics like Humanitarianism, Programs/Operations, Protection, Staff Welfare, and Management and Leadership. More than 30,000 people have used the site, including experts, staff and volunteers from organizations like Action Against Hunger, Harvard Humanitarian Institute, PeaceCorps and Oxfam.
A deadly tornado hit the city of Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd, 2011, destroying or damaging 8,000 properties and leaving hundreds of residents homeless. Farmers Group donated more than $500,000 and logged 10,000 hours of volunteer work in response to the disaster. Thirty top-level Farmers executives launched a data program predicting a recovery completion date, which allowed nonprofits to map out their presence in Joplin through 2014. The results of the project were also shared with the City Manager to ensure a city-wide understanding of the process to recovery.
