Rallying Recycling in the Second City
The City of Chicago’s successful transition to a residential curbside cart recycling program saves the city $15 million in annual operations and landfill costs. A partnership among Coca-Cola, Keep America Beautiful and Keep Chicago Beautiful helped the City establish city-wide recycling for low-density residences with a donation of 35,000 curbside recycling carts in 2013 and 2014. With 600,000 residential curbside recycling carts in place city-wide, recycling collection has increased 700 percent since 2007 to nearly 100,000 tons in 2014.
