CITGO Lemont Refinery Employees Help Beautify Shady Oaks Camp

(3BL Media) Lemont, IL - June 22, 2012 - The CITGO Community Action Team (CCAT), the employee volunteer team at the Lemont Refinery, continued its dedication to community service by helping prepare Shady Oaks Camp for another summer of supporting adults and children with physical and developmental disabilities. Located in nearby Homer Glen, Illinois, Shady Oaks Camp works to enrich the quality of life of its campers through outdoor activities and recreational programs.

Twenty-five CITGO Lemont Refinery Community Action Team members worked on June 5, 2012 to beautify the Shady Oaks Camp grounds by cutting grass, planting flowers, and pulling weeds. The team also brought in construction equipment to move large piles of cement blocks and gravel.

“At CITGO, giving back to the communities we serve is part of who we are,” said Jim Cristman, Vice President of the CITGO Lemont Refinery. “We believe that giving of our time and resources to help others is a core value. Our employees have been volunteering at Shady Oaks for many years and I’m proud of their dedication to such an outstanding organization.”

Founded in 1947, Shady Oaks Camp is dedicated to providing people of all ages and backgrounds who have a disability with the same recreational opportunities and summer camp experience that their peers without disabilities enjoy. The camp provides an opportunity for personal growth, increased self-esteem, and social skills building.

John Segina, a caretaker at Shady Oaks Camp, shared his gratitude to the CITGO volunteers saying, “We really appreciate all the work CITGO does for our camp every year. It is such a large help for us because the work they accomplish in one afternoon would take us more than a month to do ourselves. By taking on this burden, the CITGO team gives our staff the rare opportunity to work on larger projects for campers that would otherwise be placed on the back burner.”

The CITGO Lemont Refinery employs more than 800 local residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy. While Lemont refinery employees produce high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of nearly 6,000 locally owned CITGO stations across the country, they also make a major positive impact on the community. Each year more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental and preservation programs.
