The Coastal Bend Bays Foundation presented the award to CITGO in recognition of the refinery’s efforts to reduce waste generation and air emissions.
In 2017, TeamCITGO contributed more than 400 volunteer hours to environmental initiatives and coastal restoration. TeamCITGO—comprised of CITGO employees, family members, retirees and contractors—dedicated time at Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge as well as at Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center, and the Big Shell Beach Clean-up, organized by the Texas General Land Office.
“We truly are humbled to receive this award. At CITGO, we are deeply committed to helping safeguard the environment for future generations and to continue enhancing the quality of life in the communities in which we have the privilege of operating,” said Randy Flowers, Interim Vice President and General Manager for CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery.
In remembrance of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that devastated the Gulf Coast, CITGO established the Caring for Our Coast initiative in 2014. Now in its fifth year, this program focuses on coastal restoration and conservation, continues to build on its success and supports on-the-ground habitat restoration, including educational and volunteer opportunities for the community and CITGO employees. Since its inception, this initiative has helped restore more than 5,100 acres; planted more than 420,000 grass plugs, trees and bushes; and collected more than 10,800 pounds of trash.
