Butterflies Take Flight for Education in Mexico
QUERETARO, Mexico, November 24, 2020 /3BL Media/ – International Paper’s North American Container business in Mexico has sponsored butterfly kits for three schools in Silao, Juarez and Los Mochis. Through the company’s collaboration with Granja Mariposa Papilia, a farm that raises butterflies to promote environmental education, the program teaches students about the importance of protecting our environment and the key role of butterflies in ecology.
The inaugural project saw more than 1,300 students and teachers participate in one of three virtual presentations with a biologist. The presentations had a “Día de los Muertos” theme, since on Día de los Muertos, butterflies represent a loved one’s spirit visiting the living.
The kits includes a live caterpillar for students to care for and watch transform into a butterfly. Because the students are attending school virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the butterfly kits also include various activities to do at home.
“It’s an honor for us to team up with a company like International Paper who is a responsible steward of the environment and is helping us educate and create a new generation of Guardinas de la Naturaleza (Guardians of Nature)”, said Director of Granja Mariposa Papilia, Karen Santander.
The company’s collaboration with Granja Mariposa Papilia in Mexico builds on its successful collaboration with Celebrate Planet Earth in the United States. Through this program in 2020, around 53,000 students in 2,100 virtual classrooms experienced the natural wonders of the butterfly lifecycle.
