Bombardier Partners with La Sapienza University on Engineering Master
February 19, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation today concluded its participation in the infrastructure and railway systems engineering Master’s degree at the world-renowned La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy. Bombardier provided a one-week module on railway applications in order to prepare future skilled engineers for the railway industry. During the lessons, students analyzed a wide range of railway industry topics, such as infrastructure, rolling stock, rail control solutions and maintenance services as well as railway operation critical issues.
Bombardier Transportation employs more than 200 engineers at its manufacturing site in Vado Ligure and its railway control solutions engineering centre in Rome. They are currently working on Bombardier’s leading edge projects including the new Frecciarossa 1000 high speed train for Trenitalia, also known as the V300ZEFIRO, and the safety system of the Italian rail network for the network owner RFI.
Thirty students are attending this year’s Master’s degree course, drawn from a group of 180 graduates. They were selected based on their academic grades as well as their field of specialization, from electrical to mechanical, infrastructure or civil works engineering. Several of the students have already embarked on careers in the railway industry and have joined the course to improve their skills further.
Bombardier’s one-week module called Sharing Our Knowledge follows the same training format as applied at its manufacturing site in Vado Ligure. It provides students with insights and recommendations on topics central to the rail industry, including traction, train control and brake systems, bogies, welding, product safety, homologation and testing, and an overview of current state-of-the-art processes in rolling stock manufacture as well as project and bid management.
“Partnerships with academia like La Sapienza University form an integral part of Bombardier’s dialogue with stakeholders and contribute to our growth strategies globally,” said Roberto Tazzioli, Chief Country Representative Italy, Bombardier Transportation. “Our company has worked together with universities for many years as we strongly believe in the importance of attracting talented young graduates into the rail industry. High profile initiatives like this Master’s degree enable students to gain a first insight into the professional world that awaits them. We take our role as a responsible corporate citizen seriously and offer these students the possibility to learn the principles of modern rolling stock production and project management based on our global experience as rail technology leader.
