Bloomberg Opening Doors, and Building Them
This month, as we opened the doors to our new Tech Hub in San Francisco, we also helped build doors (and walls and showers…) for some of our new neighbors.
Joined by members of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and Buzzfeed, we partnered with Habitat for Humanity’s Greater San Francisco chapter on their Habitat Terrace project in San Francisco’s Ocean View neighborhood.
About a dozen Bloomberg employees and their significant others donated their Saturday to build safe, affordable homes for families in the community. Volunteering is a big part of Bloomberg’s culture and we have been a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity since 1996.
Their goal is to build 28 single-family homes in Habitat Terrace – which began in October 2013 – by the fall of 2017. Like many Habitat for Humanity projects, about 85 percent of all the construction is done by volunteers, including framing, plumbing, painting, dry walling, siding, and much more. Their next major milestone goal will be in July, when they hope to have four of the houses completely finished and move-in ready.
Bloomberg Software Developer Eric Vander Weele, who volunteered with his wife, said the project was the perfect blend of team bonding and community building.
“It was great being part of a project that’s transforming the community and making a difference,” said Vander Weele.
