Charles Dickens wrote in Oliver Twist, “The sun – the bright sun, that brings back not light alone, but new life, and hope, and freshness to man – burst upon the crowded city in clear and radiant glory.”What a fitting quote as we held a ribbon-cutting event to commence commercial operations of a 9.95 megawatt solar-panel system at Lilly’s biopharmaceutical operations in New Jersey – a place where we believe hope is happening.

The site is home to a state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing facility that is an integral part of the production process for a few of our marketed oncology products as well as several molecules in clinical development.

Almost half of the annual electricity needs for the facility where all of these bright things are taking place will now come from the new solar-panel system.  At the same time, this renewable-energy source (one of the largest for the pharmaceutical industry globally) is projected to save us approximately $1 million in energy costs a year – funds we can direct toward further development of new medicines.
