Biogen Ranked #1 Biotech on Climate - 100 Best Corporate Citizens

At Biogen, we feel a great sense of responsibility in our role as a corporate citizen to make a positive impact. That’s why we are proud to be listed as the #1 Biotechnology company on Climate Change in 3BL Media's annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking. Our goal is to be a catalyst for positive change and, as an organization, we aim to operate within the boundaries of what is sustainable for our communities, which extends to what we consume, emit, and leave behind. 

Over the years, Biogen has taken a science-based approach to reduce the environmental footprint in our operations. These efforts include reducing fossil fuel and energy usage through both incremental and major improvements in manufacturing, investing in more efficient and healthier buildings, focusing on integrating more sustainable processes into our drug development, and engaging with the highest climate-impacting supply chain partners to advocate for direct climate reductions in the products, packaging, and services Biogen purchases.

This continuous improvement approach has generated a 76% reduction in our operational carbon intensity since 2006. In the last 6 years alone, Biogen has eliminated emissions from our electricity consumption and offset the remaining emissions with certified carbon offsets. More recently, Biogen Portugal began replacing its fleet with fully electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to eliminate the harmful impacts of fossil fuel combustion. 

While these are significant achievements for our business, it is clear that more is needed. In 2020 we will continue to advance our corporate responsibility leadership and work to find solutions that align with the recommendations of climate scientists to move beyond carbon offsets. Ultimately, we believe that by doing the right thing for our community and the world, we can help build sustainable value for all our stakeholders.
