Barclays AFTER Programme Celebrates its Five Year Anniversary
Barclays’ Armed Forces Transition, Employment and Resettlement (AFTER) programme celebrates its five year anniversary. Since it was established in 2010, AFTER has helped more than 3,500 ex-military personnel to make the transition from the military to ‘civvy’ street.
The AFTER programme provides work placements, direct employment opportunities, CV and interview coaching, and money management sessions, as well as funding for education and vocational courses for service leavers through charity partners.
Barclays recognises the significant value that ex-military employees can bring to the corporate world, and is committed to supporting these highly skilled individuals as well as ensuring that companies see hiring service leavers and veterans as not just a ‘nice-to-have’, but as a business imperative.
Meet some of the people who have benefitted from AFTER support over the years.
Will was a Platoon Commander in the 3 Rifles Battalion in charge of 40 soldiers. He was deployed in Operation Herrick to Afghanistan in 2009 and three months into the tour was injured. During his rehabilitation he joined Barclays on a placement; he was supported by a mentor who helped guide him through the corporate world. Will’s secondment was then extended to a full year, and he was subsequently interviewed for a permanent role.
Will is now the Community Leader for Sussex, taking responsibility for and overseeing the branch network across the Sussex region.
Private Martin Baker served with the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment and completed a tour of Afghanistan. He was injured in 2013 and while awaiting medical discharge he received funding and support through AFTER and one of our service charity partners, Support our Paras, to undertake training to become an ambulance technician. He has successfully completed the training and is now better equipped to secure civilian employment on discharge from the Army.
