Bacardi Unveils Plan To Slash Energy Use, Water Use, Greenhouse Emissions

Showing that the push toward sustainability is no fad, spirits giant Bacardi has set new environmental goals that would cut its water use and greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2017.

The plan affects all 27 manufacturing and bottling facilities, where the Bermuda-based company operates and its 75 offices, including the U.S. headquarters in South Florida.

Since starting to track its environmental impact in 2006, Bacardi said it has trimmed energy use by more than 25 percent and cut water use by 54 percent. Projects include using wind power in Puerto Rico, re-purposing water used to clean barrels, plus mulching retired barrels for use on landscaping.

Its new sustainability plan sets goals in three areas:

Responsible Sourcing: The company aims to obtain all raw materials and packaging from sustainably sourced, renewable or recycled materials. For its premium rums, It seeks to obtain 40 percent of sugarcane-derived products from certified, sustainable sources by 2017 and 100 percent by 2022.

Global Packaging: Bacardi commits to use eco-design for brand packaging and point-of-sale materials. It plans to cut the weight of its packaging by 10 percent by 2017 and by 15 percent by 2022.
