Bacardi Employees Travel Around Corporate Campus on Bicycles
Pedal power reduces noise, pollution, and saves time on island nation of Bermuda
Hamilton, Bermuda, August 9, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Sturdy, dark blue bicycles bearing ST-GERMAIN® elderflower liqueur branding serve as a sustainable solution for employees who work at the Bacardi Limited worldwide headquarters in Bermuda.
Employees use the company-provided bicycles as a means to travel around the world’s largest privately help spirits company’s campus and local community as part of the ongoing Bacardi Limited “Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future” environmental initiative.
“The use of bicycles as a mode of transportation to and from work is important for us because pollution and the use of fuel is reduced, the noise level is minimal, it saves time parking, and we can get our exercise at the same time,” says Clara Fay, Director of Corporate Affairs, for Bacardi in Bermuda. “The bikes were popular with our staff, who use them on company business in the city and for running errands where they would normally use a car or scooter. This is just one of the many ways we can help to build a more sustainable future where we live and work.”
The Bermuda National Trust, a non-profit working to preserve the natural, architectural and historic treasures of Bermuda, recently recognized Bacardi for the bicycles initiative with an Awareness Award for advocating green programs. “Bacardi has a deep and abiding commitment to sustainability and the Bermuda National Trust is pleased to recognize Bacardi for the sustainable initiative that provides employees bicycles to travel around Hamilton,” says Lawrence Doughty, Conversation Officer.
The company has five traditional French-style bikes, complete with wicker baskets, for use around Bermuda, all marked with the ST-GERMAIN logo, with an additional six on order. The bikes are similar to ones used by elderflower harvesters, who use bicycles to get into the French Alps to collect the flowers used to craft the liqueur.
Since 2006, when Bacardi began tracking its global impact on the environment, it has improved both water use efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity ratio by 46%. Building on current programs and efficiencies that reduce its environmental impacts, the Bacardi Limited “Good Spirited” sustainability program sets specific goals in three areas to help the Company reach its vision of a net zero impact:
- Responsible Sourcing: Bacardi strives to obtain all raw materials and packaging from sustainably sourced, renewable or recycled materials while maintaining or enhancing the economic status of growers and suppliers. By 2017, the goal is to obtain 40% of the sugarcane-derived products used to make its rum from certified, sustainable sources – and 100% by 2022. This pledge from Bacardi is an industry first.
- Global Packaging: Bacardi commits to use eco-design to craft sustainability into its brand packaging and point-of-sale materials. By 2017, Bacardi plans to reduce the weight of its packaging by 10% and achieve 15% by 2022.
- Operational Efficiencies: Bacardi continues to focus on reducing water use and GHG emissions with a 2017 goal to cut water use by 55% and GHG emissions by 50%. Also, Bacardi aims to eliminate landfill waste at all of its production sites by 2022.
