Avista Announces City Hall Plaza as a gift to Spokane
Avista Corp. and the City of Spokane announced a partnership on a new public plaza that will replace the parking lot immediately north of City Hall. The new plaza will connect Riverfront Park with the area known as Huntington Park, which Avista began renovating earlier this month and will serve as a new community gathering place.
Under the partnership, the City made the land available, and Avista is building the plaza as a gift to the City from the shareholders of Avista Corp in appreciation of the 125-year partnership between WWP/Avista and the people of Spokane. The plaza project will not be included as a cost to customers in developing retail rates.
““Our company’s history is intertwined with that of the city, and this project will give us the opportunity to commemorate all the opportunities we’ve had to work together to build a strong, vital community,” said Avista Corp. Chairman, President and CEO Scott Morris. “Building a public plaza outside of City Hall between Huntington Park and Riverfront Park ties the spaces together in a way that invites people to use the parks and enjoy the spectacular views of the river.”
A gathering space for events, tiered seating and enhanced landscaping will be among the elements in the new plaza. The plaza will be handicap accessible.
“Parks and the river are tremendous assets, and with this generous community gift, Avista has captured the true spirit of how people embrace and use both,” said Spokane Mayor David Condon. “The public plaza will tie together two important parks, invite people to enjoy the river in new ways and provide a great venue for community events.”
