The Amgen Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis is a 10-week intensive summer laboratory experience in biomedical research for undergraduate students. Scholars will work with a mentoring team made up of world renowned research faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in the lab to develop an intriguing research project, creating an environment for scholars to become acquainted with the culture of training for and implementation of biomedical research. The Amgen Scholars Program is administered by the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences (DBBS) which is also responsible for the administration of PhD and MD/PhD programs in the biological sciences.
Scholars will also participate in lab meetings, scientific and professional development seminars and workshops, and exciting social activities. The seminars and workshops will include topics such as scientific writing and presentation skills, preparing for the GRE or MCAT, team building, and career development. The Scholars will write a paper and present a scientific poster at the end of the summer. The program will also prepare them to apply to top-tier graduate and professional schools and foster an understanding of the excitement and trajectory for a career in creating new knowledge.
Applications are encouraged from U.S. citizen or permanent resident undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds from around the United States, including Washington University. Prior research experience is not necessary. Rather, we will focus on the applicant's demonstrated curiosity and aptitude in math and science, strong letters of recommendation and interest in PhD or MD/PhD training in preparation for a career in biomedical research. Participants will receive a generous stipend with housing, as well as travel to and from St. Louis and to the Amgen Scholars U.S. Symposium. A free public transportation pass for travel within the St. Louis Metro area will also be provided.
