The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the Nation's biomedical research institution consisting of 27 Institutes and Centers dedicated to improving human health worldwide. Scientists in the NIH Intramural Research Program work on NIH campuses where they tackle complex problems in human health at the basic, translational and clinical level. The Amgen-NIH Scholars Program will take place within the NIH intramural program on the main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, close to the vibrant and diverse communities of our Nation's capital.

The Program will have four core components: 1) independent research performed under the mentorship of an NIH intramural scientist; 2) Career guidance and mentorship focused on the broad array of biomedical careers; 3) roundtable discussions exploring the intersection of research and public policy; and 4) leadership training focused on the skills needed to successfully work in team-oriented global research environments.

Participants will take part in career development programs including the Graduate & Professional School Fair and the ""Going to Graduate School"" series. Scholars will also explore the role of science in society, working to develop an understanding of how research informs public policy. This will be accomplished through roundtable discussions focused on strategies to eliminate health disparities.

The program welcomes students from colleges and universities across the United States and its territories; housing, travel, and a stipend will be provided. The program is appropriate for students with an interest in translational science, a commitment to exploring graduate school and biomedical research careers, an interest in the intersection of science and society, and a desire to learn more about global health disparities. Students from diverse backgrounds and students who are unable to participate in research internships during the school year are strongly encouraged to apply.
