About one in eight American women, or nearly 12 percent, will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2014, the U.S. had more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer. About 85 percent of the breast cancer cases occur in women who have no family history of the disease. These are some of the statistics shared by the American Cancer Society for 2014.

Mammography is considered the most effective way for women to protect themselves from breast cancer. If the disease is diagnosed early through mammography, the five-year survival rate is as high as 98 percent. To promote mammography and to increase awareness about the disease, the American Cancer Society celebrates the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) every October.
