Apple Announces $2 Billion Investment for Green Data Centers in Europe

Data centers have emerged as one of the largest and fastest growing consumers of electricity in the U.S., according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 2013, data centers located in the U.S. consumed 91 billion KWH of electricity, which was enough to power all the households in New York City twice over. Over the next five years, the annual consumption of electricity by the U.S. data centers is estimated to reach 140 billion KWH.

Positioning itself as a sustainability leader in Europe, Apple has announced that it will invest nearly $2 billion (€1.7 billion) to build two new data centers in Europe that will run on 100 percent renewable energy. The centers, which will be located in Ireland and Denmark, will use wind power and other green fuel sources. The centers will be used to power Apple services such as apps in its App Store, Siri and iMessage.
