On America Recycles Day, Las Vegas Sands Continues to do its Part to Minimize Waste

At Las Vegas Sands (LVS), we care deeply about the environment and have worked tirelessly over the years to incorporate sustainable practices into our regional operations. One such practice we are very proud of is waste management – the collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage and other waste products. Regular audits are conducted by the Sands ECO360 sustainability team, as well as outside industry experts to identify potential opportunities at all of our properties around the world to improve and enhance our global waste management processes. New and innovative waste management initiatives have been implemented and we strive to recycle as many commodities as possible.

The Las Vegas campus is the birthplace of Sands ECO360, the global sustainability program of LVS. As such, a number of initiatives were first implemented at The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo. In 2014 and 2015 alone, the Las Vegas campus implemented over 100 unique waste minimization and recycling projects spanning across 50 departments.

Several food donation programs are in place at our Las Vegas properties to help those in need. All unused and unprepared banquet food is donated to local non-profit agencies such as Three Square Food Bank and Catholic Charities. In addition, a partnership with Chefs to End Hunger organization allows for the distribution of leftover meals from our employee dining areas to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, another local organization that helps fight hunger in the Las Vegas community. Also, non-perishable food items that are close to expiration are sent to Harvest Time, a non-profit dedicated to feeding people in need all over the world.   

This year, The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas partnered with Nevada Recycles to conduct its 3rd annual statewide recycled art contest to raise awareness and interest in recycling. Participation showed off not only the many recyclable materials around us, but also highlighted how creativity can reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill. Cash prizes of up to $250 were awarded to the top projects in each category. Winners were selected by a jury and announced by America Recycles Day, November 15th.

At all of our properties around the world, even with recycling infrastructure constraints in some of the local markets, we have expanded our recycling programs to include plastic, paper, cooking oil, glass, amenities, wood, plants, playing cards and computer hardware.

At Las Vegas Sands, we take pride in knowing that our sustainable practices are benefiting the environment and helping countless people worldwide. We all need to do our part to support one another and protect our environment for future generations. We are hopeful that our practices inspire other individuals and companies to explore and implement as many sustainable initiatives as possible.
