On May 16, 2013, winners of the 2013 VolunteerMatch Corporate Volunteer Awards will be announced at our annual VolunteerMatch Client Summit in New York City, NY. In this series of posts, we’ll introduce you to people and ideas behind the ten most effective employee volunteer programs in our family of corporate clients compared against our annual benchmarks.

As a finalist for VolunteerMatch’s Employee Volunteer Program of the Year in the Small to Medium Business category, NV Energy takes pride in its long-standing role as a community partner. In fact, in a tradition of philanthropic excellence, the Nevada-based energy company was also a finalist in the 2012 VolunteerMatch Corporate Volunteer Awards.

NV Energy’s social responsibility strategy is designed to improve the quality of life for the people who live and work in their service territories. They accomplish this through their financial contributions, sponsorships, employee volunteers, involvement on nonprofit boards, in-kind donations and community partnerships.

A key component of NV Energy’s commitment to volunteering are its two Employee Volunteer Councils (EVCs). The EVCs consist of employees from diverse backgrounds who coordinate and lead year-round volunteer activities and evaluate opportunities. The company also has a retiree program, Sierra Connectors, which provides planning support and group volunteer coordination for its employee network after they leave the workforce.

In 2012, NV Energy supported organizations that advocate health, education, arts and culture and the environment. Among its top accomplishments in 2012:

  • Over $600,000 was distributed in Project REACH energy assistance funding.
  • Employees gave more than 39,500 hours of community service with an estimated $800,000 in community financial impact.
  • The company was recognized as Philanthropic/Public Business of the Year Award from Vegas INC’s annual Angel Awards and won  the 2012 Urban Chamber of Commerce’s Corporation of the Year Award.

NV Energy will compete with 1st Source Bank, City National BankOld National Bank, and Union Bank for the top award among small and medium businesses.

We are thrilled to recognize everyone at NV Energy for an outstanding volunteer program. Congratulations!
