AAFA Releases New Restricted Substances List For 2016
Every SIX MONTHS the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) releases and updates their restricted substances list to provide retailers within the footwear and apparel industry information on a list of laws and regulations that restrict various chemicals in finished products. The AAFA has extended into a resource for companies to check into their production and provides a guide on how to undertake responsible chemical management practices.
So What is Affected?
There are 12 CHEMICAL CATEGORIES with 250 CHEMICALS in all affected. The AAFA continues to develop their Restricted Substances List to update international and national regulations restricting the use of certain chemicals in product manufacturing.

- Arylamines
- Asbestos
- Dioxins and Furans
- Disperse Dyes
- Flame Retardants
- Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases
- Metals
- Miscellaneous
- Organotin Compounds
- Pesticides
- Phtalates
- Solvents
Who is Affected?
- European Union (with a few regulation updates that specifically affect Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland)
- The United States (with a few regulation updates that specifically affect New York, Vermont, and Oregon)
- Canada
- Asia (with a few regulation updates specifically that affect Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia)
EU REACH Regulation
The EU REACH regulation has been significantly updated in this restricted substances list and extends into SIX of these categories. The categories affected were:
