Volunteer Group Serves the Denver Community

Sustainability is one of Newmont’s core values, and this commits us to serve as a catalyst for local economic development through transparent and respectful stakeholder engagement and as responsible stewards of the environment. In Denver, Newmont’s Socially and Environmentally Responsible Volunteer Employees (S.E.R.V.E.) committee is one of the ways that we’re working to honor that commitment.

First established in 2009, S.E.R.V.E. has a mission to inspire and empower Denver employees to give back to the community. Last year, S.E.R.V.E. fundraising initiatives totaled nearly $50,000 and contributed more than 350 volunteer hours to various worthwhile organizations.

As part of those efforts, the committee launched the Serve Your Way campaign, which encouraged employees to submit an event idea along with a $1,000 donation towards a charitable organization of their choosing in the Denver area.

Committee co-chair Lisa Eddy highlights the benefit of the Serve Your Way campaign’s unique approach to corporate volunteerism: “Through this employee-led initiative, the process of choosing which charitable organizations we worked with was made by those who would be on the ground, volunteering their time. Our volunteers felt a personal connection to the cause, and were that much more determined to make an impact.”

One of the ideas chosen from the campaign benefited the December efforts of Feeding Denver’s Hungry. In the video below, S.E.R.V.E. committee members and Feeding Denver’s Hungry founder, Jim Scharper, share their excitement about the event.

In the year ahead, S.E.R.V.E. will be focused on bolstering its community of volunteers, with increased engagement and functional development opportunities, which include an abandoned mine rehabilitation camping trip with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado in June and a renewed Movember campaign later in the year.
