USW and OSHA Talk Beryllium Safety
The United Steelworkers (USW) praised the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for taking steps towards implementing a proposed rule on improving safety standards for workers exposed to beryllium. This proposal was brought up during a meeting between members of OSHA and the USW. The international president of the USW, Leo Gerard, commented that "When [the rule] goes into effect, it will save not only the lives of USW members, but all workers exposed to beryllium."
Beryllium is a frequently used and multi-functioning metal that is utilized in quite a few industries. Exposure to beryllium happens during the manufacturing process when dust and fumes can harm workers. During the course of prolonged exposure, workers can experience “...severe, debilitating and sometimes fatal lung disease," according to the USW’s Health, Safety and Environmental Director Mike Wright. The proposal has been in discussion for almost 35 years but appears to be rapidly approaching fruition.
