Toyota to Hold 30th Toyota Youth Orchestra Camp and Special Public Concert at Suntory Hall
Tokyo, November 18, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Toyota Motor Corporation announces that Toyota and the Federation of Japan Amateur Orchestras Corporation (JAO) will jointly hold the 30th Toyota Youth Orchestra Camp at the Ueno Gakuen in Taito Ward, Tokyo from March 27 to 30, 2014. In addition, a special public concert marking the camp's 30th anniversary will be held at Suntory Hall in Tokyo's Minato Ward on March 30.
The Toyota Youth Orchestra Camp, sponsored by Toyota as part of its social contribution activities, has been conducted in conjunction with the JAO as a four-day study program since 1985 to cultivate and train young* musicians from across Japan. Leading professional musicians act as instructors, encouraging the pupils to grow independently and helping them develop performance skills and techniques with the aim that valuable experience be taken away and exercised in regional orchestras. To date, the camp has been host to more than 5,000 pupils, with many past participants now active in such orchestras.
The annual camp operates on a two-year cycle, and in the second year, participants form the Japan Youth Symphony Orchestra and give a special public concert on the final day of the camp to showcase the results of their efforts.
The special public performance will be conducted by Junichi Hirokami, who has performed with many orchestras around the world and has extensive conducting experience. He is passionate about training the next generation of musicians and is chief conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra as well as a professor of conducting at the Tokyo College of Music. Fumiaki Miura will be appearing as a violin soloist. In 2009, Miura became the youngest-ever first prize winner of the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover, said to be one of the world's most difficult, at the age of 16. Miura, who is approximately the same age as the camp participants, will perform Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A-minor and other works with the 160-member-strong orchestra. Miura will also perform with his father, Akihiro, who is also serving as one of the camp instructors and is a concert master of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
