Sustainability in Action: Education in Peru
Our Yanacocha operation is located in the province of Cajamarca, a region in Peru known for its agricultural communities. As part of Newmont’s commitment to be a catalyst for long-term socio-economic development, Yanacocha has invested in improving access to basic education for many living in the rural communities close to the mine.
In 2007, Newmont’s Yanacocha operation in Peru began contributing to the national literacy and education initiative known as PAEBA. In partnership with local and regional governments, the program aims to raise the levels of education for adults and young people in the rural communities.
Directly and through its corporate agency for sustainable development – Asociacion Los Andes de Cajamarca (ALAC) – Yanacocha has contributed to the improvement of basic education through adult literacy programming; construction and infrastructure upgrades for educational institutions; training programs for young entrepreneurs; and numerous school network projects. These initiatives supplement and support the educational policies of the Peruvian government.
On the ground, Newmont’s Yanacocha employees contribute to rural education through the corporate volunteer program by donating books, as well as facilitating activities that enhance physical education.
