SPREAD THE WORD…with MUD!
Graffiti that makes you think...
Graffiti that makes you think...
When you think of graffiti, usually you think of vibrant colors exploding out of a brick wall or sidewalk, making a political or personal statement. Unfortunately, most of the graffiti out there ends up as a crude image of poorly planned out typefaces and overused copy—most often it’s misspelled and says something like “YAR WUZ HERE 2007.”
And as with all types of art, there is graffiti done well and graffiti done not so well. Good or bad, graffiti art should not be dismissed for its pure illegitimacy, but appreciated for its form, style and most importantly, its message.
One graffiti artist in particular has brought graffiti AND natural resources to whole new level. His medium is earth (mud) and his statement is “protect our environment.” A perfect combination for his message.
Jesse Graves is an artist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has made a point to spread the word about protecting our planet and resources through his well–crafted graffiti art.
“I began stenciling with mud to put environmentally conscious messages in public spaces. I use mud or earth because it is a fundamental life-giving substance, logical for my messages. Mud stencils are an evolving medium, intended for art and social justice.” — Jesse Graves
You can see more of his work on his website, Mud Stencils.
Jesse was even kind enough to write up a Do–It–Yourself Guide for making your own mud stencil graffiti art. Instructions can be found on his website under the “How to do it” section.
(Note: In no way does Greenopolis promote illegal and/or bad graffiti art. Proper permissions should be granted and only environmentally safe materials should be used for creating graffiti.)
Enjoy...and remember to graffiti responsibly!
