Sustainable Furnishings That Salvage a Bit of the Past

Now, admittedly, primitive furnishings aren’t for everyone – but many decorators would agree that just one piece can bring any style room to life with unexpected texture and interest. Something Old, Something….Edible?
Primitique owners, Bill and Beth Merryfield, design and create their entire line of furnishings at their shop in Aston, Pennsylvania. They like incorporating reclaimed materials that they find at historic auctions and salvage yards to make each piece truly unique. They buy wood from local mills and even use fabrics made from recycled materials using 100+ year old Pennsylvania looms. The furniture is hand-distressed, hand-painted, and finally hand-waxed. The company even uses homemade milk paint and beeswax that they make themselves.
“We joke that our products are edible,” says Bill Merryfield.
Merryfield admits that maintaining a suitable price point for a product that involves this much personal care and attention is challenging, but he has found a customer base that appreciates, and is willing to pay a reasonable price for, this level of craftsmanship.
“We find that customers can truly feel and see the difference in quality between our line and a cheaper or imported line. We strongly support American Made initiatives and try to educate our customers on the importance of buying local and buying American, too. Many folks instinctively understand this notion and are willing to pay a little more for quality craftsmanship that they can pass down for generations,” adds Merryfield.
A prospective Primitique buyer could be anyone with an appreciation for the past. That makes Primitique a suitable choice for just about everyone, at some point in their life.
