MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton to Play Host to “Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway” Event Featuring Assemblymember Isadore Hall III, Community Leaders

Members of the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton will help distribute 6,000 turkeys to residents of Compton, North Long Beach, Paramount and South Los Angeles as the community youth facility plays host to the “Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway.” Sponsors including Assemblymember Isadore Hall, Progress California, YP (formerly Yellow Pages), Radio Free KJLH, local elected officials and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity are providing the turkey giveaway as part of the event. Now in its ninth year, the event is a multi- pronged philanthropic collaboration among Hall, local officials, YP, and community leaders committed to reducing obesity, diabetes and HIV/AIDs in underserved communities while promoting healthier lifestyles for children and families. Free diabetes, HIV, blood pressure and BMI health screenings will be available to residents. Guest speakers will provide information about hypertension, obesity, diabetes and kidney care, as well as healthy eating tips. Representatives from Covered California will also be on hand to provide information and help residents sign up for free or low-cost health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act. The 64th Assembly District has the largest number of adults and children that suffer from diabetes and obesity in the state of California and the district has the second highest concentration of residents eligible for financial assistance through the ACA in California. The event will help more than 5,000 residents in Los Angeles County enroll in Covered California’s health insurance marketplace. Free turkeys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

About MLB Urban Youth Academy

The MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton is part of Major League Baseball’s Urban Youth Initiative. Encompassing more than 20 acres on the campus of El Camino College, Compton Center, the Academy is a state-of-the-art facility featuring four fields, including a show field complete with scoreboard, grandstand seating, dugouts and lights; an auxiliary field; softball field; youth field; and a 12,000 square-foot clubhouse consisting of a weight room, locker room, and other training facilities, as well as batting cages and pitching mounds. The Academy operates on a year-round basis, offering free baseball and softball instruction, as well as clinics to youth throughout Southern California. MLB is committed to providing opportunities to play baseball and softball to young people in urban America through the establishment of the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academies. In addition to the first Academy in Compton, MLB has established and is operating programs at the Houston Astros MLB Urban Youth Academy and the New Orleans MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
