Innovators Turn Seafood Waste into a Billion Dollar Business

According to nonprofit Oceana, each year American fishermen throw out an estimated two billion pounds in by-catch alone – an amount worth about $1 billion. In cases where the EPA permits fish waste to be tossed back into the ocean, seafood processors usually dispose of fish guts, heads, tails, fins, skin and crab shells in marine waters. This decomposing organic matter can harm the local marine ecosystem.
Fishing entrepreneur Craig Kasberg’s company Tidal Vision has developed a vegetable-based tanning process for salmon skin, and launched a line of wallets made from salmon skin leather.
