IBEW Funding Supports Local Boston Veterans

BOSTON, MA, November 13, 2015 /3BL Media/ – Through its participation in CBS EcoMedia’s WellnessAd program, electricians and telecommunications specialists labor union International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103 is supporting local veterans through the nonprofit New England Center and Home for Veterans. The partnership will bring energy-efficient appliances to Single Residency Occupancy Units and impact 59 veterans for the next five years. 

Located in the heart of downtown Boston, the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) works to provide the tools and resources that enable successful independent living and meaningful employment for all veterans. Founded in 1989, the organization has grown to provide a multitude of services ranging from clinical support, vocational training programs, to emergency, transitional and permanent housing solutions for homeless veterans in the Boston community. To date, NECHV remains one of the largest private resource providers to homeless veterans, assisting more than 1,500 people annually. 

Thanks to IBEW Local 103’s support, the 10-story, 106-year-old building at 17 Court Street will now be equipped with energy-efficient appliances, allowing NECHV to provide improved living accommodations to veterans while using less energy. The new appliances will include eight Xlerator air hand dryers, 40 personalized compact room refrigerators, as well as two Bosch refrigerators with drinking accessories for common areas of the veterans’ living quarters. Though the project is directly impacting 59 veterans today, based on the life span of the energy-efficient appliances and on an estimate of individual veterans who will utilize the building’s single residency occupancy units, IBEW Local 103’s support will impact an estimated 500 veterans over five years.

To celebrate the partnership, IBEW Local 103 joined NECHV onsite at 17 Court Street where they had a private tour of the veterans’ living quarters, spent time with the veterans, and assisted in the installation of the new energy efficient appliances. Attendees included John Dumas, Business Manager at IBEW 103; Andy McCawley, President and CEO at New England Center and Home for Veterans; and local CBS television station WBZ.
