Going Global: UTC Expands Partnership with Junior Achievement
Supports program that will transform Chinese and American teens into global entrepreneurs
On a warm and sunny August afternoon, 20 high school students from Shanghai, China and 20 more from Wallingford, Conn. laughed and chatted as they toured the lush fields of the 272-year-old Lyman Orchards farm in Middlefield, Conn.
It was a novel and exciting experience for 17-year-old Sisely Sun. “In Shanghai, I didn’t [ever] look at a farm,” she said with an infectious smile, adding that the field trip was something she’d been looking forward to as a highlight of her first visit to America.She was also full of anticipation about an upcoming excursion to the New York Stock Exchange and another to the Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol, Conn.
These and other outings provided an opportunity for the 40 students – members of a first-of-its-kind international initiative launched by Junior Achievement (JA) and sponsored by United Technologies Corporation (UTC) – to bond and get to know one another.
Over the coming school year, these students will collaborate to build a global company.
It’s goal? To manufacture and sell a product that will generate profits, create a return for investors and transform its teenaged executives into entrepreneurs.
