The Benefits of Communicating Sustainability Values to Employees

Employees are often argued to be the greatest resource of a company.  When employee’s values resonate with those of the corporation, they are more productive, loyal, and their work is meaningful.  But, What do Employees Need to Know about Sustainability at Your Company?  What are your employees saying about your organization?  Are they equipped with information and engaged in your company’s business sustainability programs to passionately take eco action on the corporate vision?     While the corporate sustainability plan may be in place as well as corresponding policies and guidelines, there are a multitude of opportunities to communicate the corporate CSR message to employees and integrate it in a way that empowers employees to align daily decision making consistent with the corporate sustainability goals.    According to Forbes' CSR Blog, "Studies show that positive employees outperform negative employees in terms of productivity, sales, energy levels, turnover rates and health care costs." In addition, "optimistic sales people outperform their pessimistic counterparts by up to 37 percent. People who expressed more positive emotions while negotiating business deals did so more effectively and successfully than those who were more neutral or negative."  This means that the tangible elements of generating happiness — autonomy, competence and worker relations — should also be business priorities.
